Are you exercising proper tipping etiquette?

Tipping can be a complicated equation, especially since there doesn’t seem to be an exact formula that fits all industries. If you have ever started to sweat at the thought of calculating the tip when the bill comes or felt unsure what you put down was appropriate, you are not alone. The following guide is designed to help reduce tipping anxiety so you can feel good about the amount you choose to give, depending on the circumstances.

Dining out

Typically, you could gauge your tip based on the service quality you receive when you’re eating out. Whether you have a stellar experience or a lackluster night dining out, though, you should leave a tip, advises Libby Wells, writer for Bankrate.com.

“For the wait staff at sit-down restaurants, the tip should be 15% to 20% of the pretax bill. Tips are not necessary when you pick up your order or at fast-food restaurants,” she adds. Before you add a tip to your receipt, make sure gratuity hasn’t already been added for you, Wells warns.

Dining in

The pandemic changed how many people acquire their meals and groceries. Food delivery is now ubiquitous and growing in popularity. And it now offers more than just pizza! If you take advantage of a delivery service like Instacart or Shipt, Wells leans on the guideline of 10% to 15% of the bill.

“But if they go above and beyond to get you essential supplies during a difficult time, you may tip 20% to 30% or more. For takeout food deliveries, it should be at least 10% of the bill,” she adds.

Traveling around

If you are far from home and taking refuge at a hotel, tipping is an important activity. According to Reader’s Digest writers Charlotte Hilton Anderson and Claire Nowak, you should earmark $1-$3 per night for housekeeping, and any extra services like replacing your forgotten toiletries earn a bump of $5.

“Tip daily, leaving cash in an envelope marked for the housekeeper or with ‘hotel housekeeping’ written on the front,” they report. If a valet is tasked with handling your vehicle, be sure to tip $5 to $10 when you give them your keys, Hilton Anderson and Nowak recommend.

Freshening up

A day at the spa or a visit to the salon can be a wonderful way to spend a few hours. Typically, your appointment may include one or more services, which means one or more technicians who deserve a tip. The etiquette experts at EmilyPost.com break tipping down into three categories. They advise a 15-20% tip that can be split among the people who helped you at the hair salon. If you had your nails done, the same range should be given to the manicurist. Other services like waxing, a facial, or massage, require a 15-20% tip as well.

Prioritizing tipping in your transactions shows gratitude to the professionals you work with and your satisfaction with the services you purchase. Be sure to tip accordingly, keeping this guide in mind, and adjusting the final amount to the level and quality of service you receive.
